Operation OverlordOmaha Beach
The stage is set for Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy and the beginning of the push toward final victory over Germany. Even though air strikes have intensified against German coastal defenses, a formidable enemy awaits atop the cliffs.
Battle of Bloody GulchCarentan
The objective of the attacking American forces is to consolidate the U.S. beachheads and establishment of a defensive line against German counterattacks. The defending German force must hold the city long enough to allow reinforcements on route from the south to arrive and keep the U.S. First Army from launching an attack.
Battle of the BulgeThe Ardennes
The German Army must commence a massive counterattack against a thin spot in the Allied front. German forces unleash a sudden, all-out attack with everything they have. German forces must fight desperately to stop the Allied advance across the Siegfried Line and into Germany.
Siege of BastogneBastogne
The goal of the German offensive is to push through the American line on to the harbour at Antwerp. The Allies must hold in order to regroup and bring their superior air power to bear. The Germans must drive a wedge between the American and British armies in order to deny the Allies use of the port.
The Siegfried LineAachen
The city had been incorporated into the Siegfried Line, the main defensive network on Germany's western border; the Allies must capture it quickly and advance into the industrialized Ruhr Basin. It is one of the largest urban battles fought by U.S. forces during the war, and if successful the first city on German soil to be captured by the Allies.
Operation Market GardenArnhem
The Allies must secure bridges at several key points on the Rhine River. An Allied unit has been dropped behind enemy lines to capture the city and secure the bridge. Their mission is to hold off German troops and hold on to the bridge until the arrival of reinforcements. It is critical that these soldiers must hold the bridge at any cost.
Operation PlunderWesel
Preparations were hidden by a massive smoke screen from 16 March. The operation commenced on the night of March 23, 1945. It included the Varsity parachute and glider landings near Wesel, and Operation Archway, by the Special Air Service. The landing areas were flooded, deserted farmland rising to woodland.
The Eagle's NestKehlsteinhaus
The easy capture of Salzburg surprised 3rd Infantry Division commander Maj. Gen. John W. ‘Iron Mike’ O’Daniel because he expected a tough fight, like the one his troops had experienced a couple weeks earlier at Nuremberg. In looking at a map, O’Daniel realized that the 7th Infantry was now in perfect position to make a dash for Berchtesgaden. The Allies, led by Maj. Gen. John W., must push through the German resistance and capture The Eagle's Nest.
